Do You Need a DJ or Entertainment Permit in Abu Dhabi?

Booking a professional DJ in Abu Dhabi is usually straightforward, but the event licensing and entertainment permit side can be less obvious—particularly if you are organising an event for the first time.

The short version is that Abu Dhabi has a formal Events Licensing System administered by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). Depending on the type of event, venue and organiser, permits and approvals may be required for entertainment.

That does not mean every person hosting a small private gathering should independently start filing government applications.

For many organised events, the licensed venue or event organiser is the party that deals with the relevant system and approvals.

The important thing is to establish responsibility early.

IMPORTANT — CURRENT AT 22 SEPTEMBER 2026: Event rules, fees and processes can change. This guide summarises current DCT Abu Dhabi information but is not legal or regulatory advice. Always confirm the requirements for your specific event with your venue, licensed event organiser, DCT Abu Dhabi or TAMM.

Abu Dhabi entertainment permits at a glance

Current DCT material lists:

  • AED 200 application fee for an entertainer permit
  • AED 500 per entertainer/performer under the published entertainer-permit fee structure
  • an indicated three-working-day processing period for the service
  • AED 500 urgent-request fee where an event or entertainment permit request is submitted or modified less than three working days before the event
  • valid passport copy and recent portrait among the published required documents

The Event Licensing Manual also describes entertainer permits as being valid for one to six months, with the published fee charged per month for each entertainer/performer/participant.

Your organiser or venue should confirm exactly which permit type and fee structure applies to your booking.

What is the Abu Dhabi Events Licensing System?

DCT Abu Dhabi describes the Events Licensing System as the unified system for registering and licensing events across the Emirate.

It covers a wide range of activities, including recreational, marketing, sporting, artistic, educational, tourism and other events.

The system helps coordinate approvals across the relevant authorities rather than asking organisers to navigate every department independently.

Applications are accessed through the Abu Dhabi government ecosystem, including TAMM.

Who can submit an event application?

This is an important point.

DCT states that registration for the Events Licensing System is restricted to relevant licensed parties such as event organisers and venue/facility operators holding the appropriate trade licence.

In practice, that means a client booking a DJ at a hotel, event venue or professionally organised function will often provide the necessary performer information to the venue or event organiser, who then handles the formal submission.

Do not assume, however, that somebody else has done it.

Ask.

Does a DJ need an entertainment permit?

For events that fall under the DCT Events Licensing System, DJs can fall within the entertainment/performer approval process.

The safest approach is to ask the venue or licensed organiser:

“Do you require entertainer permit documents for the DJ, and are you submitting the application?”

If the answer is yes, provide the requested information promptly.

Leaving it until the week of the event can create unnecessary complications and may trigger urgent fees.

Does every private villa party need the same permit?

This is where overly simple online advice becomes risky.

A private gathering in a residence is not necessarily processed in exactly the same way as a public ticketed event, hotel function, commercial venue event or corporate activation. If you are arranging a private celebration, the Private Party DJ page explains the entertainment service separately from the regulatory process.

Requirements can depend on factors such as:

  • where the event is taking place
  • who is organising it
  • whether the venue is commercially licensed
  • whether it is public or private
  • the type and scale of entertainment
  • other activities taking place at the event
  • community or property rules
  • noise and operational restrictions

If you are organising a villa event, ask the property owner, community management where relevant, and any professional event organiser involved whether additional permissions are required. The villa party planning guide covers the wider sound, setup and neighbour considerations.

A DJ should not pretend to be the final authority on licensing.

Who normally handles the permit for a hotel or event venue?

For a professionally managed venue, the venue or event organiser will normally tell you what performer documentation they require.

That is common because they already understand their own licensing status and the approvals attached to the event.

As the DJ, I may be asked to provide details such as identification documentation or a photograph so the authorised party can complete the process.

For clients, the practical lesson is simple:

Confirm the permit process with the venue before assuming it is included.

What does an Abu Dhabi entertainer permit cost?

According to the current DCT Abu Dhabi service catalogue, the published entertainer-permit fees include:

  • AED 200 application submission fee
  • AED 500 per singer/performer

The DCT Event Licensing Manual describes the entertainer permit as valid for one to six months, with a fee of AED 500 per month for each entertainer/performer/participant.

Because different event and permit types exist, your licensed organiser or venue should confirm the final amount that applies to the particular event.

What about large events?

DCT's Event Licensing Manual also describes a Temporary Entertainment Permit for major events hosting more than ten performers/participants.

The manual lists:

  • AED 5,000 for an unlimited number of entertainers
  • seven-day validity
  • AED 1,000 for a seven-day renewal
  • AED 200 application fee

That is much more relevant to large productions than a normal single-DJ booking, but it demonstrates why event scale matters.

How long does the process take?

The current DCT service catalogue states three working days for the entertainer-permit service.

That should be treated as a minimum planning reference rather than a reason to submit everything at the last moment.

DCT specifically advises organisers of larger events or events involving multiple participants to submit earlier so there is time for relevant approvals and amendments.

What is the urgent-request fee?

Since 1 October 2024, DCT has applied an AED 500 urgent-request fee when an event permit or entertainment permit request is:

  • submitted less than three working days before the event
  • modified less than three working days before the event
  • updated with additional participants inside that period

Official holidays and weekends are excluded from the three-working-day calculation.

DCT also notes that paying the urgent fee does not guarantee approval, particularly where other government entities need to approve the application.

This is one of the strongest reasons to organise entertainer details early.

What documents might be needed for the DJ?

The current DCT service catalogue lists:

  • a valid passport copy
  • a recent portrait

Specific events can require additional information or approvals, so the venue or event organiser should provide the definitive document list.

If you are booking a DJ for a corporate event or managed venue, ask for any permit-document requirements when the booking is confirmed rather than a day or two before the event.

What if alcohol is being served?

DCT's Event Licensing Manual also contains separate provisions around alcohol at events.

It states that where alcoholic beverages are served at a location that does not already hold a valid liquor licence allowing service, a separate temporary permit is required and beverages must be obtained through the appropriate licensed route.

That is an event/venue issue, not something a DJ can authorise.

If alcohol is part of your event, confirm the position with the venue or organiser.

A sensible process when booking a DJ in Abu Dhabi

Step 1 — Confirm the venue

Before dealing with entertainment paperwork, establish exactly where the event will happen.

Step 2 — Ask who is responsible for licensing

If you have a venue or event organiser, ask them to confirm what they are handling and what they need from the DJ.

Step 3 — Provide performer information early

Once requested, send the required documentation promptly.

Step 4 — Allow enough time

Do not build the event plan around the minimum processing period.

Step 5 — Confirm approval before the event

For a managed event, the organiser or venue should be able to confirm that the required process has been completed.

Questions to ask your venue or event organiser

Before your DJ booking is finalised, ask:

  • Does this event require an event licence or entertainment permit?
  • Who is submitting the application?
  • What documents do you need from the DJ?
  • What is the deadline for sending those documents?
  • Are there any venue-specific sound or performance restrictions?
  • Are there fixed load-in and soundcheck times?
  • Is any separate approval required for other entertainment?

A professional venue will usually be familiar with these questions.

Why this matters when choosing a DJ

Licensing is not the glamorous part of organising an event, but professional bookings involve more than music.

A DJ working regularly with hotels, corporate organisers and established venues should be comfortable supplying required documentation and coordinating with production teams.

That makes the process easier for everybody.
