A house DJ and an open-format DJ can both be excellent, but they may approach the same event very differently.

What is a house DJ?
A house DJ specialises in house music and its related styles.
That can include:
- deep house
- vocal house
- funky house
- disco house
- tech house
- afro house
- melodic or progressive influences
- commercial house
A good house DJ usually thinks in longer musical transitions and builds energy gradually.
The set can move from sophisticated background music into a strong dancefloor without feeling as though the soundtrack has suddenly changed personality.
What is an open-format DJ?
An open-format DJ is comfortable moving across a much wider range of genres.
A set might include:
- commercial dance
- hip hop
- R&B
- afrobeats
- pop
- 80s
- 90s
- 00s
- rock
- current chart music
- regional or specialist genres depending on the DJ
Open-format DJs often make quicker genre changes and work particularly well when a client wants broad familiarity across a mixed audience.
Neither is automatically better
This is important.
A house specialist is not more “serious” than an open-format DJ.
An open-format DJ is not automatically more versatile in every meaningful sense.
It comes down to the event.
If you are planning a sunset yacht event and want a stylish, flowing soundtrack that becomes more energetic later, a house-led DJ may be ideal.
If you are organising a large celebration where guests expect rapid movement between pop, hip hop, rock, Arabic favourites and old-school classics, a true open-format specialist may be the stronger choice.
Where a house DJ works particularly well

House music creates atmosphere without demanding the dancefloor immediately.
It works well for drinks, socialising and the transition into the later part of the night.
Yacht events
Deep, vocal and melodic house are naturally suited to sunset and waterfront settings.
The music can then become more energetic as the event develops.
Lounges and hospitality venues

This is one of house music’s natural environments, which is reflected in my own experience at venues such as Cafe del Mar Abu Dhabi, Cove Beach Abu Dhabi and Yas Beach.
Where an open-format DJ may be the better choice
An open-format specialist can be ideal for:
- highly mixed-age family celebrations
- events where guests expect broad chart music
- parties with many specific genre requests
- events requiring rapid shifts between cultural or musical styles
- celebrations where singalong familiarity is more important than a consistent musical identity
If that is the brief, choose a DJ who genuinely specialises in it.
Can a house DJ still play commercial music?
Yes—many can.
The important question is how far outside their specialist area they are comfortable going.
My own approach is house-led rather than house-only.
The foundation may include deep, vocal, funky, disco or tech house, but I can incorporate:
- commercial dance
- R&B
- hip hop
- UK garage
- selected 80s/90s/00s tracks
when the audience and event call for it.
The difference is that I still try to make the set feel intentional.
I do not want the music to sound as though somebody has jumped between unrelated Spotify playlists.
Does house music work for guests who are not “into house”?
Often, yes.
People sometimes hear the words “house DJ” and imagine a very underground club set.
House is much broader than that.
A good event set can use recognisable vocals, disco influences, familiar samples and accessible grooves while still maintaining the flow of house music.
The DJ should judge how deep or how commercial to go based on the audience.
The importance of crossover
For private events, crossover is often where the best moments happen.
You might start with sophisticated deep house.
Later, a familiar vocal can lift the room.
That can lead into disco house, commercial dance or a well-selected 90s record.
Then the DJ can move back into contemporary house once the dancefloor is established.
This works when the transitions feel natural.
Which DJ style suits your event?

Ask for a music conversation before booking
A good DJ should be able to discuss the brief without simply saying:
“I play everything.”
Useful questions include:
- What do you normally play?
- What kind of events suit you best?
- How commercial can the set become?
- Do you take requests?
- Can we provide must-play tracks?
- Are there genres you do not specialise in?
- How do you handle mixed audiences?
The answers will tell you whether the fit is genuine.

Do not book a DJ purely from a mix online
A recorded mix is useful, but it shows only one side of DJing.
A live event involves:
- reading the room
- changing direction
- handling requests
- managing volume
- responding to the event schedule
- deciding when not to push the energy
A technically perfect one-hour mix recorded at home does not prove somebody can manage a five-hour private event.
Use mixes alongside real venue and event experience.

- a very broad mainstream repertoire
- maximum singalong familiarity
- strong focus on varied requests
If you want something between the two, ask the DJ how flexible their sets actually are.
